If Trump wants to help veterans, he can start with L.A.’s homeless: Guest commentary

This is not just a cute idea. I promise.

Question: What is the biggest, most immediately solvable problem in Los Angeles?

Answer: Veteran homelessness.

Question: Who do we all know who has proved that he knows how to build and do so on time and under budget? And can he cut through red tape that has prevented construction?

Answer: Donald J. Trump.

The homeless census says there are between 3,000 and 4,000 homeless veterans in Los Angeles County tonight. They sleep in dumpsters, under the freeways, and in cars with their children. Many have died in our streets. This is unacceptable on so many levels!

The biggest Veterans Administration facility in the United States is in West Los Angeles. As a result of successful litigation, the VA agreed to important new initiatives. In particular, the VA created a land use plan for the site. This had never been done in more than 100 years of ownership.

In addition, the VA worked with veterans advocate and Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Florida, chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, to pass a federal law that incorporates the plan and makes it possible to construct enough housing and supportive services on the West L.A. campus to house every single homeless veteran.

Housing construction had been illegal!
